All About Diamond Rings: Understanding Diamond Quality, Cuts, and Settings

To buy the perfect diamond ring, you have to understand how diamond quality is determined, along with other factors. At Mark Broumand, we offer custom-made diamond rings you can customize every aspect of.

When you understand the cut and settings of diamond engagement rings, you’ll be able to confidently pick a ring that your partner will love.

How to Determine Diamond Quality

When buying an engagement ring, you want your partner to have the best, and that’s why diamond quality matters. There are 4 aspects to diamond quality that you can use to determine which ring you should buy, called the 4Cs. When you’re ring shopping, focus on your bride-to-be’s style and these properties:

  • Carat weight: Carat weight refers to the size of the diamond, with larger carat weights generally being more valuable.
  • Cut: The cut of a diamond determines its reflective properties, brilliance, and overall beauty.
  • Color: Color refers to the presence of any warmth  in a diamond. Higher grades will have less color, and may be even colorless.
  • Clarity: Clarity refers to internal or external flaws, with higher clarity grades indicating fewer imperfections.

An advantage of shopping with Mark Broumand is that all of our rings are custom-made and high-quality. Additionally, all of our pieces are fully customizable.

What Is a Diamond Ring’s Cut?

As we briefly mentioned above, the cut of a diamond ring is very important. When a diamond cutter cuts the diamond, it will typically become as one of the several types of shapes:

  • Round Brilliant cut
  • Princess cut
  • Cushion cut
  • Emerald cut
  • Asscher cut
  • Radiant cut
  • Pear cut
  • Oval cut
  • Marquise cut
  • Heart cut

Each cut shines differently. The round brilliant cut is a classic and is great for your partner if she has a classic style. At the same time, the radiant  cut is more modern and has an elegant touch. We can help you find and customize the perfect ring for her both in our showroom or virtually.

What Are Diamond Ring Settings?

Diamond ring settings are another important aspect of diamond ring shopping. We offer several types of durable settings so she can go about daily activities without the fear of her diamond getting damaged. We offer:

  • Prong: This classic setting uses metal prongs to secure the diamond, allowing maximum exposure to light and showcasing the stone prominently.
  • Bezel: In this setting, a metal rim surrounds the diamond, providing excellent protection and a sleek, modern look.
  • Channel: This setting features diamonds set closely together within a metal channel, creating a continuous line of sparkle.
  • Pavé: Small diamonds are set closely together and secured with tiny prongs, covering the surface of the ring with a dazzling array of diamonds.
  • Halo: A halo of smaller diamonds surrounds the center stone, enhancing its size and brilliance while adding a touch of glamor.
  • Three-stone: This setting showcases three diamonds or gemstones, often representing the past, present, and future, in a row or other configurations.

The type of engagement ring setting you choose should depend on the lifestyle your partner  has. You might consider a bezelsetting if she has a particularly active lifestyle or a lot of manual labor at her job.

Or if she has an office job or loves to snap outfit of the day (OOTD) photos for social media, you might want to go with fancier diamond ring settings such as channel, pavé, halo, or prong. If you have a hard time determining which to choose, ask her friends or one of our friendly staff to help.

How does Customizing a Quality Diamond Ring Work?

Our team is excited to help you find the right ring for your soon-to-be fiancée. But sometimes you want something a little different; in that case, we’ll help you customize a diamond ring. The first step of designing the engagement ring is to draw from inspiration and have an idea of what you want the ring to look like.

Inspiration can come from her Pinterest board, a friend’s ring, or a ring that she’s hinted about that she wants. Once you know what she likes, you can send us links and photos through the custom jewelry request form. We’ll get back to you within one business day, and we can give you suggestions and an exact price quote.

If you like the design, you’ll pay a deposit, and we’ll move on to the design process. We’ll send you 3D renderings of the ring so you can examine it in detail and inform us of any changes you’d like. Next, we’ll begin creating the ring with a wax model cast in the metal you chose.

Mark Broumand himself will inspect it, and then for the final step, we’ll collect the final payment. A G.I.A. graduate will appraise the ring and package it in our elegant box along with the Certificate of Appraisal.
